Big Sir’s Message

Big Sir
Bevin Hong
I’ve noticed something interesting about retirement. We all seem to get very good at justifying our hobbies.
- Golf? It’s exercise.
- Coffee? It’s social interaction.
- Cards? It’s keeping the mind sharp.
- Wine tasting? Well…that’s supporting local agriculture.
Speaking of wine, we’re excited to welcome our August speaker, Patty Powers from the Livermore Valley Winegrowers Association. Since nearly half of our members participate in our monthly wine tasting group, we thought Patty would be the perfect guest speaker. She’ll share the history of Livermore Valley wine, what makes our local wineries unique, and why our valley has become one of California’s premier wine regions.
Even if you’re not a wine enthusiast, I think you’ll enjoy the presentation. And who knows, you might discover there’s more to wine than simply asking, “Is it red or white?”
As always, one of the things I enjoy most about SIR is seeing members discover new interests they never expected. Whether it’s wine tasting, golf, bocce, hiking, or just coming to lunch for good conversation, there’s always an opportunity to learn something new and spend time with great people.
I hope you’ll join us for what promises to be an informative, and appropriately spirited, luncheon. I look forward to seeing everyone there!
A Note From Your Little Sir

Little Sir
Casey Brierley
Our speaker in August will be Patty Powers, the Livermore Valley Winegrowers Association relations manager, who will be giving us an update on the wineries in our area. Since we have a wine group this should fit in nicely with our activities and maybe give us some ideas for future meetings.

Poker

Poker
Bob Law
Once a month we have poker night at a volunteer host home between 6:00 and 10:00 pm on the third Tuesday or Thursday. Since we play 7 card games the signups are limited to 7 players on an email announcement, with first responders first. Hosts supply simple snacks, poker table, cards and chips. If necessary there’s a lot of participants that can loan these items upon request.
Announcements are e-mailed out each month or scheduled for several weeks in advance. New participants will have priority for the first several months. If you’re unfamiliar with any of the games, each can be explained or you can observe. Each participant starts with $20 worth of chips. Bets are $0.25 to start with three possible $0.50 raises for each dealing. Last bets are up to $1.00 with three raises.
Games we play, by dealer choice: 5 card draw, 7 card with wild card variations, Omaha, Anaconda, Baseball, Heaven and Hell, Tic Tac Doe, plus others via dealer’s choice.
