Dear fellow SIRs,
March Madness is just about over and hopefully your team is still in the tournament. We have plenty of SIRs activities if you’re bored sitting in front of the TV. Take advantage of one of those great live presentations at the Bankhead to get another couple or two and start a new theater group!
The Coffee and Chat group continues to meet regularly. The poker group is always looking for new players and hosts. Couples Dining out has gotten started and is welcoming more people.
We are planning the annual picnic at Highland Oaks clubhouse on June 20. Women are welcome and we will collect checks for the event at the May and June meetings. There will be no meeting on July 4.
The majority of us lead quiet, unheralded lives as we pass through this world. There will most likely be no ticker-tape parades for us, no monuments created in our honor. But that does not lessen our possible impact, for there are scores of people waiting for someone just like us to come along; people who will appreciate our compassion, our encouragement, who will need our unique talents. Someone who will live a happier life merely because we took the time to share what we had to give. Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, of the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around. Its overwhelming to consider the continuous opportunities there are to make your love felt.

We are very excited to have Mr. Werner Schlapfer as our Speaker for the April 4th Luncheon Meeting at San Ramon Golf Club Werner Schlapfer came to the US in 1956 as the result of a job offer by the shipping company he worked for in Switzerland. He later returned to college and got a degree in physics and a PhD in Neurobiology from UC Berkeley. He last worked for the Department of Veterans Affairs at the VA in Livermore and retired in 2001. He joined SIR 121 and then SIR 101, and became travel chair in 2005, As travel chair, Werner guided four SIR trips to Switzerland between 2007 and 2013. He also led three hiking trips between 2005 and 2013 to the Swiss Alps for the Hillhikers, a local hiking club which has many SIR members. This talk is based mainly on the SIR trips and will cover a little about Swiss history and government structure, some sightseeing trips, some hikes, and some festivals.
