SIR 34 September 2020 Newsletter
Day 168 of the Alameda County
COVID-19 SIP Orders
But now in September the garden has cooled, and with it my possessiveness. The sun warms my back instead of beating on my head ... The harvest has dwindled, and I have grown apart from the intense midsummer relationship that brought it on.
Robert Finch
A little-known Irish festival called Garland Sunday was observed on the first Sunday in September, and still is celebrated in some parts of western rural Ireland.
Edain McCoy
The summer ended. Day by day, and taking its time, the summer ended. The noises in the street began to change, diminish, voices became fewer, the music sparse. Daily, blocks and blocks of children were spirited away. Grownups retreated from the streets, into the houses. Adolescents moved from the sidewalk to the stoop to the hallway to the stairs, and rooftops were abandoned. Such trees as there were allowed their leaves to fall - they fell unnoticed - seeming to promise, not without bitterness, to endure another year. At night, from a distance, the parks and playgrounds seemed inhabited by fireflies, and the night came sooner, inched in closer, fell with a greater weight. The sound of the alarm clock conquered the sound of the tambourine, the houses put on their winter faces. The houses stared down a bitter landscape, seeming, not without bitterness, to have resolved to endure another year.”

Big Sir.
At one of our Zoom Board meetings we learned that there are two internet sites that offer online card playing with Video and Audio. Those folks who wish to play Bridge, Hearts, Euchre, Pitch, Whist, 500, Pinochle or Oh Hell should check out www.trickster.com it has both audio and video. A couple of SIRs have played Hearts, Joanne Helsel plays Bridge. Give it a try, it's fun!
For you poker players take a look at www.pokernow.club free to join. It offers Texas Holdem and Omaha (no low game). You set the stakes, follows the Little and Big blind betting scheme. Table seats 10, it also offers audio and video. You can control the speed of the hands, the timing to decide to bet, raise or fold and when the next hand is dealt. A bit of a learning curve but fun once you get the hang of it.

But when fall comes, kicking summer out on its treacherous ass as it always does one day sometime after the midpoint of September, it stays awhile like an old friend that you have missed. It settles in the way an old friend will settle into your favorite chair and take out his pipe and light it and then fill the afternoon with stories of places he has been and things he has done since last he saw you.
