SIR 34 February 2018 Newsletter
Big SIR
Adrian Verduzco
It’s February and we’re well into Winter, even though at times it does feel like it. I’m hopeful for an early Spring, so that we can enjoy more outdoor activities. If not, there are plenty of SIR activities to keep us busy like wine tasting, bridge, poker, breakfast club, computers, and dancing just to mention a few. My wife and I went to the wine tasting in January and enjoyed trying different wines and tasty food. A good time was had by all who attended.
New activities and ideas are always welcome and will keep our group a fun place to be by trying something new and making new friends.
As we always mention, it’s vital to the health of our branch to keep bringing guest to our lunches. Members leave for various reasons so finding potential new members is important in keeping our branch membership steady. I encourage our new members to bring in guests for lunch and also get involved with activities, which is a great way to know more of your fellow members.
See all of you at the next lunch.

Little SIR
Jim Benham
Guest Speaker
Our speaker this month is Tom Ramos, a physicist from Lawrence Livermore Labs (LLNL) who will talk to us about weapons development in the 1950’s at the labs including nuclear devices which continue to support our nuclear arsenal. A good opportunity to bring your “techie friends” as a guest and potential new member.
Treasurer's Report
Tom Reif
Annual Dues Collection Time Continued
Almost everyone that attended the January meeting paid their dues (THANK YOU!) We still have 46 more to go, so at our next meeting on February 1st, we will continue collecting the annual $20.00 member dues. Checks made out to SIR Branch 34 are preferred and will improve your chances of being credited properly, but cash is also acceptable. It will be helpful to some of us old guys (like me) if you show us your badge when paying with cash.
You can also mail your check to: Tom Reif, 2259 Kamp Ct, Pleasanton 94588
Lunch Price for February is $22.
Starting in March, the lunch cost will increase to $25 as noted in previous announcements.
Please note: If you come in late for a meeting and there is no one at the table to buy a lunch ticket, please check the sign at the table to see where a treasurer (Wendell Moen, Jack Ogden or Tom Reif) is sitting and buy your ticket. Thanks for your help.

Golf
Jim Kenna
Weather has been pretty cooperative for this time of year and we have had some nice turnouts. Still looking for some of the new branch members who alleged interest in golf?
Tuesday February 20 date has been filled with Diablo Creek in Concord.
Curious if there is any interest in an overnight to Monterey say in May. Websites offer equivalent of 2 for 1 on some nice courses for example Carmel Valley Ranch cost is about $80 each and we could play Poppy Ridge on the second day.
Lots of other possibilities; Pacific Grove and a course south of San Jose if anyone wants a third round or does not like first two options. Let Jim Kenna know either at luncheon or via email, [email protected], if you’re interested.
GOLF PLEASANTON FAIRWAYS
STEVE THOMAS
Please join me for nine great holes at the Pleasanton Fairgrounds on Monday and Thursday, 8:00
AM tee off. Show up at least 15 minutes earlier for pairing.

Wine Tasting
Larry Lindsey
Our wine tasting for February will be on Friday the 9th starting at 6:30 at the Highland Oaks Club House. Joe & Erma Hernandez and Randy & Barb Reber are hosting the event. They are decorating the Club House for a Valentines theme. There will be a sheet cake for desert. This should be a lot of fun with a lot of room for sitting and visiting. Our hosts are asking us to support the Napa area by bring wines from Napa and Sonoma.

BRIDGE
CHUCK BROWN
In January, we met at our new location, John Knox Presbyterian Church 7421 Amarillo Road, Dublin.
We had 3 tables and the winners were: Dick Fields and a tie of Peter McIntyre and Bill Green.
Our next meeting will be February 13th at 1:00 PM.
Dance Carl Churilo
The dancing still goes on and there are plenty of places to go out and become a hero to your spouse. As you all know, women love to dance, so why not take them to one of the places mention below and have a great time together.
The following are places to go Dancing which my opinion are very good and reasonably prices:
Camera Club
Don Roberts
Any questions about Camera Club get in touch with Don Roberts at 846-5145 or email [email protected]

Bocce
Steve Annen
The courts at the senior center were soft and not ready for play in January. Instead we played the bocce courts at Rubino Winery 1188 vineyard ave on Tues 1/16 . As long as we were there we decided to sample some Rubino wine.
The once a month Breakfast Group
Jim Benham
The breakfast boys gathered together Wednesday, January 24 at Vic’s in downtown Pleasanton. We had a good turn-out with 10 showing up and solving many of the world’s problems. Please see Jim Benham or e-mail him at [email protected] to get more info or to join the breakfast and/or poker club.
