February 2019 SIR 34 Newsletter
February was named after the Latin word Februarius, which referred to the word februum, an old purification ritual held in February. February was one of the last two months to be added to the Roman calendar, since the Romans first considered winter a month less period.
February is always a bad month for TV sports. Football is gone, basketball is plodding along in the annual midseason doldrums, and baseball is not even mentioned.

Big SIR
Jim Benham
It is February and the month of Valentine’s Day where we all buy candy for our wives or special friends just so we can eat it.
So far we have had a good rainy season and spring is around the corner. I saw a daffodil starting to break through this morning.
Getting new members is vital to the health of our Branch, so please talk to your friends, neighbors, acquaintances and anyone else you can think of about attending one of our luncheons and learn about SIRs and our many activities. Guests lunches are always free. Some retirees tend to become isolated and lonely and SIRs is a great way to meet new people and get involved.
Big SIR Special Meeting
I would like to meet with all of the new SIRs who joined SIRs in 2018 and in January of this year for a short 5 minute meeting immediately following this month’s luncheon, I promise 5 minutes max.
Jim Benham
Little SIR
Bill Staack
Our speaker this month will talk about the Honor Flight program in the Bay Area. Any veteran may have a free trip to Washington DC as a small token to honor their service to our country. It shold be a very interesting presentation..

Annual Dues Collection Time
Almost everyone that attended our January meeting paid their
dues (THANK YOU!) We still have more to go, so at our next
meeting on February 7th, we will continue collecting the annual
$20.00 member dues. Checks made out to SIR Branch 34
are preferred and will improve your chances of being credited
properly, but cash is also acceptable. It will be helpful to some of
us old guys (like me) if you show us your badge when paying with
cash.
You can also mail your check to: Tom Reif, 2259 Kamp Ct,
Pleasanton 94588
Please note
If you come in late for a meeting and there is no one at the table to
buy a lunch ticket, please check the sign at the table to see where a treasurer
(Jack Ogden or Tom Reif) is sitting and buy your ticket. Thanks for your help.

I attended an area golf meeting late last month and they again have some nice events planned. This website gives an overview and early information. It will be updated as things are finalized.
I hope to have more Branch 34 participants in these events especially the team tournament. They also have extensive and generous payouts. More to follow in coming months
Jim Kenna (925) 989-9062
State Golf Information
SIR has some great golf opportunities!
Most Branches have a golf activity (NCGA Associate Golf Club) and play once a week at various local courses. Many Branches offer both 9-hole and 18-hole groups and play various formats (Low Net, Best Ball, Scramble, etc.).Additionally SIR offers away tournaments for all SIR NCGA Branch members. Each year we schedule several two or three day tournaments in various locations (e.g. Las Vegas, Reno, Solvang, San Diego, etc.).We also hold a State Scramble Team Championship in August and a State Individual Championship in October. Area and Division qualifying tournaments are held at various locations to determine participation in these two State Championships.
Check the State Golf Schedule. Come join us! All tournaments are handicapped and flighted. It’s fun for golfers of all abilities.

The dancing still goes on and there are plenty of places to go out and become a hero to your spouse. As you all know, women love to dance, so why not take them to one of the places mention below and have a great time together.
The following are places to go Dancing which my opinion are very good and reasonably prices:
